OrthAlign is celebrating that its technology has been used in over 500,000 joint replacement surgeries across the world.

The Irvine, California-based company’s handheld, computer-assisted surgical navigation systems (Lantern Knee and Hip) act like a “GPS for surgery,” providing real time data on bone cuts and implant placement during hip and knee replacement. It leverages micro-electromechanical sensors (like those used in smartphones and aerospace navigation) in a palm-sized, single-use device.

The milestone reflects experience from thousands of surgeons in more than 20 countries across total hip, total and partial knee, and ligament balancing in primary and revision procedures. OrthAlign tech is used in hospitals, academic medical centers and Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), supporting multiple surgical approaches and implant systems.

The company won an FDA nod for its Lantern ASC system in June, and scored CE mark certification for the Lantern and OrthoAlign Plus platforms in April.

“Reaching 500,000 procedures is an important milestone for OrthAlign and underscores the growing need for economically and operationally efficient technology solutions,” said Eric Timko, chairman and CEO of OrthAlign. “None of this happens without the surgeons who trust our technology every day, our distribution partners around the world and our employees, who have built OrthAlign. We thank them for getting us here, and are excited about where we are going.”

The company says its technology’s implant-agnostic design offers surgeons an accurate, efficient, and cost-effective option.

“We’re just getting started,” added Timko. “We’ll keep innovating, executing and building the right partnerships to bring OrthAlign to more surgeons and patients. The opportunity ahead of us has never been greater. Our focus now is on how quickly we can reach one million procedures.”
